SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) involves various practices to optimise a website’s visibility on the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) and as a result, increase the website’s organic traffic. However, it can often be difficult to understand if you’re not an SEO specialist and it’s never usually a quick win. SEO takes time and patience and lots of work. But, what is the impact of stopping SEO? As a digital agency that works with many different companies to deliver SEO, we often find it is usually the first deliverable companies want to cut. Lack of technical understanding, budget and failure to see ‘tangible’ improvements quickly all contribute to this decision. Here we explore the possibility of stopping SEO services and the impact it can have on your digital performance.
This is often one of the easiest parts of SEO for clients to understand and often if money is tight, they might decide to upskill inhouse or cut out completely. Even clients with the best intentions of continuing to produce content inhouse tend to find that resources are limited and it’s difficult to find the time to produce regular SEO content which results in a reduction of fresh optimised content on their website. What will this mean?
In general, if your site becomes less active due to less or no fresh content being produced it is highly likely you will eventually feel the effects with keywords that you’re already ranking for falling and no new rankings happening you will inevitably end up with less organic traffic to your website. You’re also like to see competitors who stay active gain an advantage in the rankings and take a share of your existing traffic.
This aspect of SEO can be much harder to understand, and we often see clients who underestimate the importance of these tasks deciding to stop technical SEO altogether. Although this part of SEO can be difficult to visualise as your site might not look any different after hours of work it is still crucial to your SEO strategy.
As your website ages and you add new pages, new sections and make changes to existing pages things can start to break. What’s more, they may not look broken to you so these errors can be difficult to spot.
As a digital marketing agency, we have SEO specialists with the technical knowledge and expertise to make sure any technical errors that arise are addressed. Here are just some of the things we look out for:
Without constant monitoring and fixing of technical SEO errors these issues can add up, eventually they can and will cause problems. You may be penalised for duplicate content or unknowingly create issues which result in your pages not showing on the SERPs.
Another big part of SEO is down to links, watching out for bad links and building good links. This is another aspect of SEO that is often overlooked by clients looking to make cuts who may underestimate the importance of this work.
Firstly, let’s look at what happens when you stop monitoring and addressing bad links. Also known as spammy links or toxic backlinks these types of poor-quality links can have a negative impact on your SEO causing Google and other search engines to penalise your site. These can crop up at any time, without continuous monitoring and removal or disavowing of these types of links you’re likely to see a negative impact on your organic traffic as your backlink profile grows out of control.
On the other hand, quality links to your website can have a hugely positive effect on your SEO and organic rankings. The more quality backlinks you have to your site, the more authoritative and trustworthy your site will be deemed by Google giving you a better chance of ranking highly for your target keywords. Without actively engaging in link building tactics your competitors will most likely get ahead of you, they will be deemed more authoritative than you, giving them competitive advantage. It will be difficult to maintain the rankings you have and even more difficult to improve or gain new rankings.
Unfortunately, with SEO once the downward trend starts it can easily spiral out of control and be very hard to recover from, we would always recommend SEO as an ‘always on’ marketing activity. Even when budgets are tight don’t be tempted to take an SEO break as the impact could be much greater than you realise. Downscale if you have to but it’s important to always keep your SEO active and keep control of the basics as it’s normally much easier to maintain and build rather than start from scratch or overcome a Google penalty – no matter who does your SEO.
